Overview: 1984

1984 is a political fiction novel set in a totalitarian government in the future. Written in the year 1948 by George Orwell, the story had its setting in that year, when brutalisation was going to overpower and result in the decline of society. It portrays a satirical tale about the ruling systems.

In the year 1984, Oceania is ruled by a totalitarian party, the leader of which is mysterious and is just known as Big Brother. The state has different departments with names that are opposite to its functions. Law and order belong to the Ministry of Love, and it only uses torture as its weapon. Anything related to war is taken care by the Ministry of Peace, and the Ministry of Truth alters the truth for the sake of propaganda according to the needs of the party.

The protagonist, Winston, is just another member of the party with no power in his hands. He is working in the Ministry of Truth and has been rewriting the historical facts in order to suit the party's propaganda. Fed up of being watched and controlled all the time, Winston starts writing down his thoughts against the party in his diary, which, in fact, is a crime known as Thoughtcrime. According to this law, one is not even supposed to think against the party. Another crime adds to his acts when he falls in love with his co-worker, Julia. But, indulging oneself to love and sex is a criminal offence in this country.

The party introduces a new language known as Newspeak, which eliminates dissident views. But Winston has his own views and tries to connect with the rebellious group, The Brotherhood.
