Overview: 2 States the Story of My Marriage

2 States:The Story of My Marriage, written by Chetan Bhagat, charts the love story between a Punjabi boy and a Tamil Brahmin girl who find their relation jeopardized due to the ethnic disconnect. Published by Rupa & Co in November 1, 2009, this book is a best-seller, coming from the author of blockbuster novels like Five Point Someone, One Night @ the Call Center and The 3 Mistakes of My Life. NYTimes has called Chetan Bhagat as the biggest selling English language novelist in India's history. Considered a youth icon, this IIM Ahmedabad graduate was also recognised by Time magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World.

2 States is a story of Krish and Ananya who are from two different states of India and are madly in love with each other. They want to tie the knot but unfortunately, their parents don't approve of their relationship. Ananya is a bright girl who is ready to break all shackles imposed by her orthodox upbringing. She is ready to live in with Krish. But when marriage plans come into the picture, both Krish and Ananya realise that they have quite an arduous task ahead in their lives. They realise that although it's easy to rebel and oppose, it isn't that easy to convince people. They both get jobs and have serious plans of marriage but will they be able to convince their parents about their choice and gain their approval?

The story is written in a humorous tone from the point of view of Krish (in the first person narrative) and has good-natured observations about both Punjabi and Tamil cultures. It is one of the most light-hearted and entertaining reads among the various Chetan Bhagat novels.

2 States combines a number of interesting and amusing anecdotes which make this a witty tale based on inter-community marriages in modern India and an illuminating narrative about how people from different parts of India can find common ground in spite of their many differences. Chetan Bhagat books are usually light, easy reads and this one is no different. The novel's simple theme rooted to middle class sensibilities has appealed to both readers and critics worldwide. This paperback book has 268 pages and is available in English all over India.

A Contemporary Indian Love Marriage 2 December, 2013 On Junglee.com
2 States by Chetan Bhagat is a fun and easy ready. The trials and tribulations of a contemporary India love marriage are well-described by the author. Inter-caste or inter-religious marriages are slowly on the rise, but only those brave few who have attempted to bring two different cultures together will know the difficulty involved. In this book, the groom is a typical Punjabi munda while the bride is a Tamil Iyer girl. The North Indian vs. South Indian family system, traditions, customs vary significantly. But ultimately love has the upper hand. What makes this novel even more interesting is that the story is inspired by the author’s own life!

  3.  Chetan Bhagat at his wittiest 16 June, 2014 On Junglee.com
CB in this book, has resorted to what he does best, writing about romance. He does have a knack to write about the psychological stuff from the minds of a basic college student. This is evident in the words he uses, the cliches he quotes and the dialogues between the couple in the novel. The story basically involves the hardships faced by a couple in love due to one primary reason- they are from different cultural walks of life. They face a tough task of convincing their parents, while discovering their relationship's strength in the process of doing so. What this novel scores the highest is certainly the charm of each culture that is described in a very convincing way. 3.25/5

  10.  The book is a waste of time, watch movie instead 29 May, 2014 On Junglee.com
    Hi,
I remember buying the first copy from store as an avid reader of chetan bhagat's.
The book utilizes the set stereotypes of IIMs and is in part enjoyable.
The interview -propose scene is so unrealistic and thats when you realize that you are reading the script of some movie. in fact, the book was written to be made into a movie.

Chetan Bhagat also look biased against his parents and north indians as a whole.
perhaps the not so good parts about his in-laws were cut out by his wife :)

The book post IIM life is tiring and you pray to get it finished for the sake of your money invested.
