2 States the Story of My Marriage Overview

2 States:The Story of My Marriage, written by Chetan Bhagat, charts the love story between a Punjabi boy and a Tamil Brahmin girl who find their relation jeopardized due to the ethnic disconnect. Published by Rupa & Co in November 1, 2009, this book is a best-seller, coming from the author of blockbuster novels like Five Point Someone, One Night @ the Call Center and The 3 Mistakes of My Life. NYTimes has called Chetan Bhagat as the biggest selling English language novelist in India's history. Considered a youth icon, this IIM Ahmedabad graduate was also recognised by Time magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World.

2 States is a story of Krish and Ananya who are from two different states of India and are madly in love with each other. They want to tie the knot but unfortunately, their parents don't approve of their relationship. Ananya is a bright girl who is ready to break all shackles imposed by her orthodox upbringing. She is ready to live in with Krish. But when marriage plans come into the picture, both Krish and Ananya realise that they have quite an arduous task ahead in their lives. They realise that although it's easy to rebel and oppose, it isn't that easy to convince people. They both get jobs and have serious plans of marriage but will they be able to convince their parents about their choice and gain their approval?

The story is written in a humorous tone from the point of view of Krish (in the first person narrative) and has good-natured observations about both Punjabi and Tamil cultures. It is one of the most light-hearted and entertaining reads among the various Chetan Bhagat novels.

2 States combines a number of interesting and amusing anecdotes which make this a witty tale based on inter-community marriages in modern India and an illuminating narrative about how people from different parts of India can find common ground in spite of their many differences. Chetan Bhagat books are usually light, easy reads and this one is no different. The novel's simple theme rooted to middle class sensibilities has appealed to both readers and critics worldwide. This paperback book has 268 pages and is available in English all over India.

A Contemporary Indian Love Marriage 2 December, 2013 On Junglee.com
2 States by Chetan Bhagat is a fun and easy ready. The trials and tribulations of a contemporary India love marriage are well-described by the author. Inter-caste or inter-religious marriages are slowly on the rise, but only those brave few who have attempted to bring two different cultures together will know the difficulty involved. In this book, the groom is a typical Punjabi munda while the bride is a Tamil Iyer girl. The North Indian vs. South Indian family system, traditions, customs vary significantly. But ultimately love has the upper hand. What makes this novel even more interesting is that the story is inspired by the author’s own life!

This masterpiece by Chetan Bhagat is a just like a bollywood love story with masala . 2 IIM students fell in love and how they struggle to get married is what this story is all about. The hero 'Krish' makes a number of sacrifices and efforts to get married to his love and ultimately succeeds though lost the hope in between. This story will make you smile, sad and ultimately enthusiastic in the end.

  9.  Cultural Ice breaker 22 December, 2013 On Junglee.com
The author is an IIT and IIM graduate and banker turned author. Rated as one of the top English language authors in India.

Storyline: The author’s self story of his marriage with Ananya Swaminathan, after he met her for the first time in a lunch que line of his management school. Having graduated in engineering from the premier Indian Institute of Technology, he joins IIM where he be-friends the most beautiful Tamil Brahmin girl, Ananya, in his class. They slowly fall in love with each other over a period of time, and decide to marry each other, by the time, they finish their post graduation in management and get into employment with Citibank and Hindustan Lever, respectively. Then, start the actual problems. The orthodox South Indian background of Ananya is in conflict with the social and outspoken Punjabi families of Krish Malhotra. Both of them strive to convince their respective families by each spending enough time, with each other’s families, trying to impress them with their best of abilities, but to only end up being accepted only halfheartedly. Finally, Krish decides to have a common get-together of both the parents in Goa, which also ends in a disaster through mutual abuses and insults on each other’s cultures, customs, skin color, educational backgrounds, etc. This breaks up the relationship between the duo. Krish gets into near nervous breakdown, when his father, (whom Krish never respected due to his authoritative nature), meets Ananya’s parents and convinces them for the marriage. The book ends with a happy note on Krish’s family attending his South style marriage and the couple blessed with twins after a couple of years.

Positives: Hilarious, witty and very entertaining. The manner in which South Indian and North Indian way of living is elicited in a witty fashion is worth reading. The strong moral of Indians remaining as Indians first and not to differentiate each other by their skin color and states they belong to is strongly emphasized and inter-state marriages encouraged to bridge this gap. Various social problems in India like dowry system, discrimination, North South egos, excessive parental control, importance of marriage of families but not just individuals and changing cultural habits of the younger generation are addressed tactically.

Negatives: The comedy in some verses might be taken seriously by some readers if they carry the South Indian versus North Indian differences in their minds and the abuses on each other might enhance that feeling of hatred. Somehow, the author seems to have slight tilt towards Punjabi lifestyle and misses both side justification.

    My rating is 3.75/5

  10.  A very light read! 11 December, 2013 On Junglee.com
A few years ago, when I read this book, I was totally amused by the way the author has presented the characters to the readers. The story was centered around a north Indian boy and a Tamil Brahmin girl(of course, a love story) which was a rarity or so I was left out thinking. Here I want to mention that Two states was my first Indian romance novel. I always gave priority to mystery thrillers over romance novels. So right after finish reading a very vexing Indian novel by a popular author, Vikas Swarup, I read this one. Not disappointed and also couldn't deny my expectations weren't satiated. So it was a OK read only.

    Positives: Hilarious, Entertaining, Bold

Negatives: Overly Annoying, Too much drama
