Overview: Agatha Christie - Endless Night

Love and evil collide on cursed ground. The title of the crime thriller Endless Night was borrowed from William Blake's famous poem Auguries of Innocence and narrates Christie's choice theme of the crime thriller:a "twisted" character, that prefers to do evil than good, every time. Here love and evil clashes on a ground that is accursed beyond measure.

A charming youth named Michael Rogers is the narrator of the story. As a penniless young man Rogers is uncertain about many things in life, but he is not at all in doubt about two things. One is that he longs to be a rich man and the other is to find a lady to marry before settling down to a 'happily ever after' kind of life. On one of his usual walks, he sees a Sale Notice for a house named Gipsy Acre which is going to be auctioned off. He explores the property and loses no time in adding it to his list. He decides that he wants to own it, but the house is in a dilapidated condition and he has no money. He has heard that the place is cursed and the few who have lived there has come to a sorry end. However he dismisses the curse as mere superstition.

The house posed no problem for Rogers because his bosom friend, Rudolf Santonix happens to be an architect. Santonix assures him that if he ever achieves money, love and some property he would create for him the house that he has always been dreaming of. Fortunately, Rogers meets a beautiful wealthy American heiress named Fenella Guteman and everything becomes easy. He buys the Gipsy Acre, and duly rebuilds the derelict house into a breathtaking structure. Now that the newlyweds have settled down to a new life in the new surroundings, strange as well scary things begin to happen.

Endless Night is a creepy little story, with a fine twist, and a disturbing conclusion. It was adapted for movie in 1972, with Britt Ekland and Hayley Mills in the leading roles. The work is dedicated to Nora Prichard, a relative of Christie, who happened to mention a field named "Gipsy's Acre" situated somewhere on the Welsh moors.

Other bestsellers by the author include Hound of Death, Murder Is Easy. Shop online for this paperback book using the ISBN-10 number of 0007282249 and ISBN-13 number of 978-0007282241.
