Overview: Alan Turing: The Enigma

Alan Turing: The Enigma, a book by Andrew Hodges links the work and life of a scientist in a way that had scarcely been attempted before. Hodges, like Turing, is a mathematician, and thus his understanding of Turing's scientific works is better than most biographers. Alan Turing (1912 – 1954) was a British mathematician, computer scientist, logician and philosopher whose contribution during World War II is unmatched. Turing devised a number of techniques for breaking German ciphers and was instrumental in cracking intercepted coded messages that allowed the Allies to defeat the Nazis in numerous occasions, including the Battle of the Atlantic. Alan Turing was also an unpretentious, homosexual man who was subjected to participate in humiliating treatment programme that led to his suicide in 1952. Again, like Turing, Hodges is also gay and his sketch of Turing's life is an absolutely fascinating experience for any reader.

Alan Hodges's book, Alan Turing: The Enigma, celebrates the works of the mathematician and philosopher while drawing parallels with the inner struggles of Turing, further fuelled by the hostility of the 20th century conservative society. The 624 page book is held in high esteem in the literary circle and has been lauded by the critics. Sinclair Mckay of Wall Street Journal writes "On the face of it, a richly detailed 500-page biography of a mathematical genius and analysis of his ideas, might seem a daunting proposition. But fellow mathematician and author Hodges has acutely clear and often extremely moving insight into the humanity behind the leaping genius that helped to crack the Germans' Enigma codes during World War II and bring about the dawn of the computer age."
