Overview: One Amazing Thing

One Amazing Thing is a fictional human interest story that shows how humans regardless of what caste, race or nationality they belong to, can come together in disastrous situations. The novel has been written by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni and published by Penguin India.

The story begins at the Indian Consulate where there are nine people present. Two of them are Visa officers who are on the verge of an adulterous affair. There is an Elderly Chinese woman and her teenage daughter, an African American war veteran, an elderly Caucasian couple, an enraged Muslim American, who is angry of being looked upon with anger and fear after the events of 9/11 and Uma, an Indian, who is on her way to India to spend her winter break with her parents. Uma is shown to be a curious character and keeps observing the people around her. Everything seems calm and dull until a tremor sweeps through the room. Everyone panics and before they can react another disastrous tremor shakes the foundation of the room and within seconds, their office room begins to leak. They realise that an earthquake had just taken place. They try to escape but find it difficult. They find themselves trapped with nowhere to run as the building starts to collapse. As the clock begins to tick and the seven survivors mark time, confusion and chaos ensues. The African American vet takes control of the situation and suggests that they should collect water and ration food as they wait for rescue. As time goes by, people grow impatient, and everyone soon starts to fight and argue amongst each other. At that moment, Uma suddenly interferes and in order to take their minds off the precarious situation makes a suggestion. She proposes that each of the nine people should narrate One Amazing Thing that has occurred in their lives. Her idea works like magic. People gradually begin to forget the stressful situation that they are in.
