Overview: Artemis Fowl

Artemis Fowl, written by Eoin Colfer, is the first book in the fantasy fiction series of the same name. The central character in this book is Artemis, a criminal mastermind, whose genius is too hard to fathom, and who is just 12 years of age. The son of an Irish crime lord, Artemis has grown into criminal activities and loves what his father does. He spends years researching the existence of fairies and is convinced that there is, in fact, an underground city, where the fairies reside. His hunt takes him to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, where along with his bodyguard Butler, he discovers the holy book of the fairies.

This helps him track down Captain Holly Short: A fairy from the underworld city who has used up last of her magic on Earth and must now restore it using a special ritual. Artemis and Butler then hunt Holly down and capture her, with the intention of holding her for ransom. At the same time, a special team is sent out by the fairies to retrieve Holly before Artemis can harm her. But can they succeed when a 12-year-old boy is one step ahead of them every time? Featuring superb illustrations to accompany the plot lines, this book makes for an enthralling read.
