Overview: Ashoka: The Search for India's Lost Emperor

Ashoka Maurya had a haunting yet majestic personality whose life has been a complete mystery to us. Ashoka reigned around 250 BCE and played a major role in transforming Buddhism from a minor sect to a major religion in the world. His kingdom extended through the Kandahar region all the way towards the Himalayan mountains.

He rose to power through wars and violence but was overwhelmed at the loss of life in what proved to be his final conquest. He realised the importance of humanity and the need to preserve it rather than destroying it for materialistic gain. He was a ruthless warrior before finding inner peace and becoming a symbol of peace and prosperity. However, today not many people know about his deeds of bravery and his name has been absolved so effectively that he was forgotten for nearly two thousand years. Eventually, British Orientalists discovered some mysterious stone monuments and inscriptions. This book tells us the remarkably mysterious facts about Ashoka the Great that was deciphered by historians. You will marvel as you come across chapters that reveal fragments of Ashoka's story bit by bit and in the process recover India's ancient history. Thanks to these discoveries Charles Allen is able to recreate Ashoka's life and tell us a multi-layered story of the man who was arguably the greatest ruler India has ever known.

The author of the book Charles Allen is a British historian. Writing comes naturally to him even though he is a freelance writer. Born in an Anglo-Indian family, his interest lies in uncovering some of India's ancient histories and the British Raj. He was born in Kanpur in 1940 where several members of his family served under the British Raj. After India received independence, He moved to England with his family. He has spent a significant amount of time in India as a historian, teacher and writer. His most notable works include Kipling Sahib, a biography of British author Rudyard Kipling and The Buddha and the Sahibs: the Men who Discovered India's Lost Religion among others. Ashoka: The Search For India's Lost Emperor is his most recent work and has sold more than a million copies.
