Overview: Asparagus Roots

Akiko Yamamoto is a young entrepreneur, who after having been schooled in the womanly arts at a Post WWII officially sanctioned comfort house (of prostitution) in Tokyo, comes to California to marry the father of her 4 year old son Daichi. Akiko’s American dream is quickly shattered when she discovers that her fiancé, US Navy petty officer Barry Bancroft, is not the upstanding man she imagined.
Akiko then takes it on herself to build a gentleman’s club where she entertains with the piano artistry she learned in her mission high school and perfected along with flirting in the comfort house. On the land attached to her club, she also finds use for the competence gained at her grandfather’s side in his market garden outside of Tokyo.
When she arrived in Sacramento she was befriended by Suki, a young American Nisei woman who has returned from the internment camps with a chip on her shoulder. They struggle to succeed in a racist environment where all seem to be against them. Together they seek to find the best revenge: to succeed wildly.
This story traces Akiko’s life from high school girl in war torn Tokyo, to war bride, to abused wife, to a wildly successful investor, to a person seeking revenge on a massive scale. But she must do it while carrying the burden of a terrible secret that lay buried under the Asparagus Roots of Akiko’s market garden in Sacramento.
