The Bachelor of Arts by R. K. Narayan, the famous novelist and short story writer, is a novel pivoting around the life and various emotional shades faced by a character named Chandran.
The story is set in Malgudi, a fictional place which the author frequently uses for his various novels. This novel beautifully portrays the psychology and inner thoughts and feelings of a young person in the pre-independence period, who after graduation, falls desperately in love with a girl in a green saree called Malti.
He wishes to marry her but his marriage proposal gets rejected outright for some complications in the kundli matching, which is very much observed in Hindu customs and tradition before deciding anything on marriage related matters. The modern and stubborn mind of this young man does not accept such rejections and get severely disheartened and decides to embark on a journey, turning his back in frustration and anger to his family and friends and the society as a whole.
During this journey, he gets to encounter many happenings and persons that make him realise that he is wasting his life and doing great injustice to his family, including himself. He then decides to get back to his true self and normal life and ultimately gets to discover love once again in the course of his life.
