What little girl doesn't like Barbie dolls? Okay fine, maybe that's a bit of a an exaggeration, but almost all young girls do go through the 'doll' phase at one age or another, and Barbie is one of the most popular dolls ever. Barbie dolls (short for Barbara dolls) are plastic dolls with hard bodies made of ABS plastic, and softer heads made of PVC. Barbie is an adult (or teenager, maybe 18 years old). This is one of the greatest appeals of Barbie. Unlike baby dolls, that you can only mother (playing at feeding, changing, telling stories, and then repeating these activities), Barbie can be anything you want her to be-a pilot, NASCAr driver, salonist, princess, fashionista- Barbie can be any of these women, and she can be them right now (these careers are not a dream for the future). A lot of kids appreciate this, because when playing detailed games, like exploring in the Amazon, flying across the Atlantic, or running your own fashion show, you need adult models, not babies.
To help with the imaginative possibilities, Barbie dolls come with a large variety of clothes and other accessories. These accessories are collectible, and many children (and adults) choose to collect huge numbers of these accessories. Entire play-sets exist for the more avid collectors; office setups, malls, salons, cars, houses, picnics, pet shops, zoos, stables..the list really is endless. But what everyone knows about Barbies is that the most fun thing to do with them is play dress up. Barbie has been created by Mattel to be really easy to change the outfits of, and this is an activity any girl that loves fashion will take to with enthusiasm. The Barbie Fashionistas' is a pretty basic start-up set, if you'd like to think of it that way. You get one Barbie with a cute outfit, a necklace, and a handbag. From then on out, all you have to do is buy other outfits, and mix, match and display, to show off just how much of a Fashionista you really are.
