I admit I didn't have very high hopes for this book, what with it hinting at a certain very popular author right from the blurb. But when I began reading Beaten by Bhagath!, I found myself pleasantly surprised.

Beaten by Bhagath! is the story of an aspiring writing who's written his first book after some prodding and with the incentive to beat his ex classmate and friend, Dr. Bhagath, who is now known as 'India's Greatest Writer'. But the actual struggle is yet to begin, as he finds out when he starts looking for a publisher for his book.

Humour, satire and veiled sarcasm are wielded with a smart hand in Beaten by Bhagath! Credit has to be given to the author for having the gumption to use well known figures (with disguised names of course, but you know who he's talking about) in his story. Further, it doesn't turn out like some failed author's attempt at taking a stab at the famed. No, like I said, the humour quotient is high in Beaten by Bhagath!, and it's all done in a very sportive manner, not derogatory to anyone (atleast, I dont think so).

Being readers, we dont get a look into the behind the scenes action of getting a book published. But Divvaakar has brought out the struggles and difficulties faced at this stage very well. It was actually an eye opener, because honestly, I never even thought of this stage at all, and it was a look into an area that is otherwise hidden from the view of the audience (I mean readers :D).

There were a couple of things that didn't sit well with me though. One of them is the use of short forms in names. This probably makes me old school, but short forms like K-10 and BB make me want to pull ot my hair and scream. I just cant take it. Also, for someone who's not into the whole Indian writing scene, they wouldn't get a lot of jokes in the book.

But at the end of the day, Beaten by Bhagath! turns out to be a hilarious read, short and well written.

Bottomline: Beaten by Bhagath! is not something I would recommend if you don't know who's who in the Indian literature scene, but otherwise, it's fun!
