Overview: Beginning Theory

Beginning Theory: An Introduction to Literary and Cultural Theory is a non-fiction book written by Peter Barry, a Professor of English at Aberystwyth University, UK, who has written extensively about literary studies. This piece of text introduces the reader to many literary and cultural theories relevant to the modern day society through literature. From liberal humanism to structuralism to post-modernism to eroticism, this book has it all. For the very fact, that Barry wrote this book to curb the deficiency in instruction of literary theory during the 1960s and inspire new students of the subject to explore and be interested in all types of literature, many beginners and advanced scholars of the subject have benefitted from this book by diving into the encapsulating depths of the subject and have come out with enlivened and enriched minds.

Now why is it so? Not only has Barry written Beginning Theory: An Introduction to Literary and Cultural Theory in simple language wherever possible but he has also presented it in a very organised manner. It is almost as if Barry is speaking to a class full of students and helping them understand a difficult subject which he thoroughly enjoys. For example, if the reader wants to know the difference between a stylistic critic and a post-structuralist critic, he or she can just find it in the contents table itself. When the reader actually goes to the specified page, he or she finds that the topic is explained in a concise manner through specifically detailed references. While many books takes a stand for or against the critics and their theories, Beginning Theory: An Introduction to Literary and Cultural Theory helps the readers to develop their own ideas once they have understood the basics of a particular topic. This fact is illustrated by the 'Stop and Think' section at the end of each topic which provides useful questions to be asked while analysing a certain piece of work.

This book illustrates the fact that Barry thrives in sharing his enthusiasm for literature with his readers. He has written extensively on twentieth and twenty century literature while focusing mostly on contemporary poetry. He also researches on Romanticism and how English literature and literary theory is supposed to be taught in theory and how it is done in practice. His other notable works include Contemporary British Poetry and the City, English in Practice and Poetry Wars: British Poetry of the 1970s and the Battle of Earls Court. This book, currently in its third edition, is available on Paperback binding at Amazon India with ISBN-13 number of 978-0719079276.
