Overview: Behind the Silicon Mask

Oh those 24 hours of pure action and thrill and drama! The serial killer who targets only immigrants is on the loose and there is a whole batch of 200 engineers at his mercy in the Milwaukee. Then there are also undercurrents of the corporate 'urgents' and the exploitative bosses who breathe down the necks of the employees, and can risk their lives to please the clients. A detective can help the main protagonists at highest risk - Partho and Varun. All this in 24 hours of raw action. This will make the hair on your arms stand. Not a raw deal for a crime thriller with believably true accounts of how immigrants live and work in a foreign land! Read Behind The Silicon Mask - 1 fook bor all this and more.

The author brings out a novel plot with so much of accountability that the story becomes almost real. Talked of as the Indian counterpart of Ben Elton, with all his darkness, the author Eshwar Sundareshan has also chosen an apt title - Behind The Silicon Mask, where Silicon can be easily associated with the profession of the main, broody, philosophically introspective protagonists in the story. They are both engineers. Despite the multitude of the characters in the story, it is not tedious to read about the meticulous backgrounds of most, and the truthfulness of it all is so credible, you will enjoy the read. The characters interact beautifully to lend good pace and flowy texture to the plot. The suspense is towards the milder side, but enjoyable.

The author Eshwar Sundareshan has already penned down Bangalored:The Expat Story and is quite popular from the success of this title. He is Bangalore based and has worked in the corporate world before, thus having a good idea about what goes on and how. 1.  An intriguing read 20 June, 2013 On
I was sold on this book when I reached this particular line ‘Osama was on top of everybody’s hit list and Obama was a spelling mistake.’

Behind the SiliconMask is a true to life account of the larger than life game that is the IT life. The novel moonlights as a murder mystery while giving you a true to life insight into the IT lifestyle that has become the norm these days.

    1. The language was fantastic and reads through in a breeze, all the while being profound.

    2. Narration : The book goes by on a terrific pace and actually ends on a practical if a little abstract ending.

    3. Characters : Keep your fingers free, you’d need them to keep count of everyone. But then, isn’t that exactly how the industry functions?

    4. Humor/Satire : Both these tones are conveyed beautifully in the book and I appreciated them equally well.

    5. Editing was phenomenal! Kudos to the effort.

For the sake of picking a bone, I'm going to point out that the murder subplot only grazed the boundaries of convincing.

On the whole, job well done.

  2.  Must Read- Thriller/Suspense Genre 24 June, 2013 On
“Behind the Silicon Mask” by Eshwar Sundaresan is a riveting read because of its narration which manages to grab the reader’s interest right from the start to its nail-biting end.

What works for the book are conceivable characters, a gripping narrative, lots of unexpected twists and turns in the story and a typical software company backdrop that many of us can associate to. The language and the flow of the story are excellent. Even if I scrutinized the book with a microscope in hope of finding a fault with the book, I couldn’t.

The author chronicles in the Acknowledgement section about how his book took a decade and twelve revisions to be published, I’m sure the book is an effort of lot of hard work and dedication and the good news is that it shows. This book is one hell of a must-read. Go pick up your copy, now.

  3.  A worthwhile read 16 July, 2013 On
Behind the Silicon Mask is in the genre of a thriller; one which is able to hold the reader's attention right till the last page. The author describes how the lives of Indian immigrants working in the IT sector in Milwaukee change when a serial killer suddenly makes an appearance. A multitude of people deal with the situation in their own way.

I liked the book for its different concept and the way the story evolved. The only thing I did not like were the numerous characters.

It is a worthwhile read for sure specially for those in the software field.
