Overview: Bhagawat: The Krishna Avatar

Bhagavat The Krishna Avatar by Anant Pai sings of the greatness of Vishnu as also his ten reincarnations. The work is said to have composed by Vyasa who wrote the epic Mahabharata. The story continues as a dialogue between Shukadeva, the author's son and King Pareekshit, Arjuna's grandson.

Bhagavat is considered to be the very essence of Hindu mythology as Gita is the essence of Upanishads. Bhagavat deals chiefly with Krishna's numerous exploits; Krishna is an avatar of Vishnu and the work emphasizes devotion, as a sure way to attain mukti or salvation. The treatise consisting of a whopping 18,000 verses is centered on the knowledge of God as also devotion to Him.

From a purely academic viewpoint, Bhagavat Purana is a conversation between Sage Shukadeva and King Parikshit who was cursed by a Brahmin to die within seven days. So he decides to spend his final days gaining knowledge on the aim of life. As the king readies himself for his imminent death, Shukadeva, who is on the lookout for a deserving disciple to whom he can pass on his immense knowledge, moves toward the king with a view to teach him. Their dialogue lasts for seven days, with the king refusing to sleep, eat or drink. It was then that Shukadeva informs the king that the eventual goal of his life is to realize the supreme and absolute truth.

The Bhagavat The Krishna Avatar is taken from the most characteristic and popular part of Bhagavat's tenth canto that narrates the life and activities of Krishna. The work describes Krishna as a heroic boy brought up by his parents, Nand and Yasoda, living in a hamlet located on the banks of the Yamuna. The acts of bravery performed by Krishna while safeguarding the villagers from several demons endears him to the cowherd girls called Gopis. In his unique and enchanting way, Krishna raises the Gopis to the highest levels of intense devotion. However, the love of Gopis turns to sorrow as Krishna leaves on a mission for Mathura. Their intense longing for Krishna is explained as a model of total devotion to Krishna, the Supreme Lord. It was the Bhagavat that paved way to the springing of diverse schools of Bhakti Movement all over the world.
