Overview: Born a Gangster's Daughter

Amina was born in Dubai in the 1970s. As a child, Amina wasbrutally beaten by her father. As she came of age, she was cruellydiscriminated against in favor of her brothers. But as a woman shenonetheless persisted in her love for her family, which was at thecenter of her life. Managing to connect her father with life-savingmedical attention at a time when he was dangerously close to death, she subsequently witnessed what appeared to be a miracle. Hergrateful father became a famous businessman and a fervently devoutMuslim. Delighted with his apparent change of heart, Amina felt asthough her loyalty had been rewarded. Sadly for her and for manyother people, she couldn?t have been more mistaken. She soondiscovered that her father was, in fact, a gangster, hiding behindthe shield of religion. This true tale is more than a disturbingaccount of hypocrisy, corruption, and betrayal. Thanks to Amina?s14-year-old daughter, Maha, who skillfully brings her story to lifein these pages, it is also an inspiring testament to the power ofspeaking the truth, of bringing meaning to suffering, and ofdiscovering what truly matters in this life.

This book was a riveting and compelling read and I found myself up past midnight finishing this novel all in one sitting.
I found myself personally relating to Amina in the sense that she and I are from the same generation, although for me growing up in a rural Canadian community where both sons and daughters were and are equally adored I feel much sadness to realize that this story very well may be shared by many girls around the world.
After reading Born a Gangsters Daughter so eloquently written by her daughter I'm left feeling shaken by the isolation, grief, fear, and helplessness of what her childhood was.
I commend Amina's bravery for sharing her story and her very talented daughter Maha for finding such inspiring words.
