Horrible Scanner, Okay Printer... Linux users better Keep Away
8 June, 2014
I purchased this Item from another online portal, for a cost of approx 7 thousand.
I specially purchased this printer because I am fed up of drying up of my canon Inkjet MFD Pixma MG3170.
I was looking for an affordable laser Monochrome printer /Multifunction device for occasional use and with precondition of Device being compatible with Linux.. I am currently using Linux Mint 16.. but can switch to any other version.. in past used Suse and Mandriva/Mageia too... after long Research I had following options:
Brother MFD including this one, Panasonic KX series (says linux compatible), canon.. and HP.. I decided to buy this device due to following facts:
1. Its Laser Multifunction device
2. Refill possible and easy.
3. Linux driver clearly mentioned as Available from website.. though no Driver inbuilt in linux or available in CD.
4. Economical to buy and Run.
5. Reasonably compact
6. I couldn't find linux drivers for panaxonic KX models in linux or their website.
I got this device after 10 days of order. Now comes the Review:
The driver and software:
Drivers and scanning softwares for Windows are included in included DVD. Getting it to work in Windows is easy... and both scanner and printer do its intended job.
Linux drivers are not included in the disc provided with printer... nor was found by default in Linux Mint 16 (latest stable version).. I downloaded drivers and installed but with no luck.. but when done with automated installed script (available on brother website), printer was recognized and it worked.. though print quality was Not as good as in windows.
Scanner could not be recognized and couldn't be made to function in Linux despite automated install... but that could be due to some problem with me...
it is decently built, with non-glossy body surface, so scratches are unlikely to spoil the look. Paper tray could have been Stronger. Paper output tray can't be opened without lifting entire scanner bed.
Meant to give 600x600 dpi Hardware resolution and i think it does so.. but when scans come out, they have a Horrible quality.. i scanned a photo..and it was full of Lines and stripes parallel to direction of scanning... and other artifacts especially if resolutions of 300dpi or above were used.. artifacts are so coarse that they are visible even at 25% pan.. and at 100% view size scans re downright Abominable. below 300 dpi resolution scans look smooth and colors and tones look fine
My old canon MG 3170 Hives 100 times better scans.
Printer part per se seems to be doing a decent job for a printer of this cost.. Printing from computer, text is sharp, but high colored graphic contents are fulls of Stripes in stead of gradients of color.. but i guess a home user looking for an economical product can live with it..
Copied documents if color graphics etc has streaks and stripes very prominent.. which seem to be due to horrible quality of the scanner... printer will print only how well scanner scans.
Ease of use:
Installing the toner and drum was easy.. though clear instructions were not shown in the quick start manual that came with it.
I would advice anyone, especially Linux users to keep away from this printer if he/she wants to use it to Copy graphic contents /Scan documents/photos at higher resolutions.
