Overview: The Brothers Karamazov

The Brothers Karamazov is a dark fiction thriller about four brothers and the murder of their father. The book explores the different shades of human beings and their darkest possible sides. Written by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, the book was completed in two years, and also became his last piece of work. It is also considered to be his finest work. The passionate philosophical novel with a spiritual drama is set in 19th century Russia. First published in 1880, the book has been regarded as one of the finest achievements in literature.

The landlord, Fyodor Karamazov, who is known for his brutality, is murdered. The murder brings a massive change in the family of Karamazov family, especially in the lives of the four sons. The story proceeds unfolding the characteristics of each and every son. The sensualist son, Mitya, is being placed under suspicion for the father's murder just because he did not have a good and healthy relationship with his father. There was a bit of rivalry between them, and thus he got suspected for the parricide. The other son named Ivan is a highly intellectual person, but after his father's death, he suffers from some mental tortures leading him to a breakdown. The family has a spiritual son, Alyosha, who tries to mend the family and bring them all together. Another character that stands out in the book is the half-brother of the Karamazov brothers, Smerdyakov.

As the story continues, the investigation to find the murderer continues and simultaneously explores the world where the difference of good and evil, innocence and corruption and everyone's faith in humanity comes under surveillance. It is a must-read book for all the thriller readers and also for those who are inquisitive about the human mind.
