This very mobile 500mm super telephoto lens has the double attraction of an original Image Stabilizing mechanism and bright large aperture of f/4. Its newly designed optical system consists of 17 elements in 13 groups, including one fluorite lens element and two UD lens elements. These have aliminated virtually all aberrations to achieve level of image quality previously impossible to attain with such high constrast and sharpness. With ringtype USM and an improved drive algorithm, its autofocus is the fastest in the world. The lens's closest focusing distance has been reduced to only 4.5m/14.8ft., and it is equipped with fulltime mechanical manual focusing, focus preset, and an AF Stop function. The use of magnesium alloy for the lens barrel minimizes weight and the lens offers superior dustproof and dripproof performance. The large f/4 aperture permits the use of autofocus when using an extender. Image Stabilization is even more effective when combined with unipod, making shooting even more accurate.

Because image stabilization technology in super telephoto lenses may inadvertently over-compensate and interfere with composing and framing distant or moving subjects, the EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM includes an advanced third Image Stabilization mode (Mode 3) that activates IS only when the shutter button is fully pressed. This allows users to pan fast-moving subjects and then activate IS only when it is precisely required. Additionally, all three IS modes give the equivalent effect of a shutter speed four stops faster, ideally positioning the Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM for professional action photography, from sports to nature. The addition of the Power Focus mode enables smooth focus change when shooting video.
