The Most Cost effective Solution to Astronomical Enthusiasists
7 May, 2013
I have been owning this product for close to 2 years now and have used this almost for hours together. My review below will help you understand the end to end perspective of this product before you decide to buy it.
To start with, the package arrives in well packed celestron box with 1 tripod, the main telescope, the eye piece prism which is used for erectile imaging, one 20MM eye piece and another 10MM eye piece.
Things that can be seen using this telescope:
- Jupiter, Jupiter's moons, Saturn, Saturn's rings, Saturn's moons, Mars, Venus, Mercury(very small), Orion Nebula(over 300 light years away), Couple of stellar clusters, Russian Space station, Comets, Constellations in closer look, Moon in very high detail(you can see the cliffs and their shadows casting on the moon)
- When comes to terrestial, you can watch any object 45X to 50X closer than your naked eye. I was able to see the filament of a street light which is around 1 KM away from my home and is mounted in a height of around 50 meters. At times of terrestial viewing, it is always advicable to use this when there is ample amount of light so that you get the best clarity and quality of vision.
The handle in the telescope provides you easy steering control which will allow you to enhance the viewing from a terrestial as well as astronomical end.
Things that should never be seen or tried using this telescope:
Sun, any form of bright light without appropriate filters: Please note that these may cause irreversible damage to your eyes. Please do not attempt to watch the sun or any form of very bright objects throughthis telescope. You may have to even give rest to your eyes while watching even the full moon thorugh this telescopes. Too bright objects too close will cause eye strain.
Good things about this telescope compared to many others in same cost range:
-> I own couple of advanced telescopes too. But this one is awesome in terms of the cost effectiveness and the things that can be seen through this. For under 8K INR, you can own a machine which shows u planets and nebulas (that are millions of miles away) from your home.
-> Telescope is light weighted. You will not have any issues in carrying the telescope around. But be carefull as it has fragile lenses.
-> This telescope comes with 2 eyepieces which are fairly enough to view all the things that i have highlighted above. Many telescopes doesnt come with default eye pieces and are always required to purchase them separately.
-> Very easy to assemble and use - Can be handled by anyone with simple instructions
-> The focuser and the pipes are well oiled and lubricated making telescope movement in a fairly decent manner
-> The laser pointer is good for people who are beginners in terms of tracking celestial objects
-> Celestron is the best in terms of the quality of lenses and optical equipments. You should see through this telescope to feel it.
Few generic difficulties about Refractor telescopes with no Automatic Guiding:(not specific to this model but in general)
-> Tracking of objects will be a bit tougher when compared to automatic tracking telescopes like Nexstar 8SE.
-> Amount of light entering the aperture is lesser than reflectors like Celestron Astromaster 130 EQ. If you have more light entering in to the lens, u will have more clarity
But I have personally tried both Reflectors as well as refractors. But will prefer refractors as it gives a direct looking feel instead of a reflected feel. Moreover, reflectors are way too huge and have heavy ballst weights which makes it tough to assemble.
Few Bad things about Celestron Astromaster 70 AZ which we should note:
-> Tripod is not very good and it causes vibrations after 1 year use
-> The steer rod in the tripod has a angling issue which will again be a slight hurdle when navigating in the sky
-> No carry case coming with the pack. (may be too much to ask :))
Things you want to have in future for various hobbies
If you want to take photographs, u need to have a SLR camera, a T Ring, a Tmount adapter and various other filters
If you want to see more or zoom more, you may have to purchase celestron lens kit for 1.25" telescopes which has around 7 different eye pieces
Overall, this is an excellent telescope for beginners. I would definitely suggest this to anyone as I love this telescope day in day out. It is one of the best astro companion for me and has given me opportunity to see the skies in a totally diffrent manner.
All the best if you have decided to buy this :)
