Overview: Chariots of the Gods

Chariots of the Gods? is an international bestseller by Erich von Daniken, the Swiss author who has written a number of books claiming that many ancient civilisations were influenced by extra-terrestrial beings to a great extent, and that such beings were worshipped as Gods by the civilisations. The book has influenced a number of films and books and also has a sequel, named The Eyes of the Sphinx. History is Wrong, Twilight of the Gods, The Ancient Alien Question are some of the other books by Daniken. A German documentary based on this book was released in 1970, which was nominated for an Oscar. Chariots of the Gods? was originally published in German in 1968, while this paperback edition was published by Berkely in January, 2012.

Chariots of the Gods by Erich von Daniken is popularly considered to be the first book to hypothesise that some parts of ancient earth had been visited by aliens, and that much of human technology and culture were influenced by them. Daniken has written this book based on his years of researches on lost cities, ancient ruins, potential spaceports, and more. Most controversially, Daniken claims that humans are descendants of these ancient aliens and he has attempted to substantiate this statement with a number of alleged archaeological discoveries like a large spaceport that he claims was discovered in the Andes, an alien astronaut that he says was preserved in a pyramid, and others.

The book has been appreciated by readers as it questions the very existence of humankind and offers an alternative, although controversial look at what the truth might be. According to the author, his books have sold over 63 million copies and have been translated into a number of languages. Director Ridley Scott has even said that his 2012 film Prometheus is in some ways related to Danikens ideas. It is written in English and has 224 pages. The ISBN 10 for this book is 0425074811, while the ISBN 13 is 9780425074817.
