Feluda is a children's mysterious and adventurous book that has grown its popularity over the years. The author, Satyajit Ray, has written 35 Feluda stories between 1965 and 1993, and the collection has been published in two volumes. Originally written in Bengali and especially for kids, the book has earned a wide fan base among adults too. The story follows a chronological order where an amateur detective grows in to a professional.
With less violence but fascinating plots and engrossing twists, the first volume of Feluda stories caters to young minds. The author takes the reader for an adventurous journey across the exotic locations of India and abroad to bring out the investigative instinct of the protagonist, Feluda aka Pradosh C. Mitter. The amateur detective starts his journey from Calcutta, then goes to Darjeeling and reaches Sri Lanka, Nepal, and even England while unravelling the mysteries. On this journey, the 25-year old Feluda comes across various murder mysteries, thrilling adventures, some humorous incidents and lots of interesting characters. The main character himself has a unique character; he knows only English and Bengali but writes in Greek in his personal diary. Sharp, valiant and brave, Feluda has a photographic memory with a great deal of knowledge. On the other hand, to lighten up the moods of the readers, the author has also incorporated the character of an amusing crime thriller writer Lalmohan Ganguli aka Jatayu. Despite his profession, he is half-witted and has an underdeveloped persona. The stories have the teenage cousin of Feluda, Topshe aka Tapesh, who also plays a part of his assistant, as the narrator. As the stories go ahead, the plots get more twisted, and the protagonist grows in to an astute investigator with smarter ways to solve the mysteries.
The Bharat Ratna recipient of 1992, Satyajit Ray was a prolific Indian writer and one of the greatest Indian filmmakers.
