Published in 1999, The Company of Women is a story of a man, Mohan Kumar, who is recently separated from his ill tempered wife after 13 years of marriage. A millionaire businessman by nature, Mohan decides to turn his life around by advertising paid lady companions to share his life and bed with him. The journey takes Mohan through a series of women all unique in their personality and physiques as he discovers the relationships love, sex and passion with women.

The theme of this book in centered around the kind of relationship shared among the opposite sexes. This book represents the story as uninhibited and erotic as well as insightful into the relationships. It is highly engrossing and an enchanting read. The book culminates in a modern day moral, as the protagonist commits suicide as he finds out he has AIDS because of the endless barrage of different women in his bed, in the end paying with his life for his promiscuity.

The author, late Khushwant Singh, was born in the then Pakistan in 1915. He was an Indian novelist, lawyer, politician and journalist. He was the proud recipient of the Padma Vibhushan. He had penned more than 30 books and was well known for his wit and humour. He has received awards such as Sahitya academy fellowship award by Sahitya academy of India and the Rockfeller grant. A truly gifted writer, Khushwant Singh was a prominent name when it came to secularism, poetry and humour. He was the editor of several literary and news magazines in his lifetime. His last novel was the Sunset Club that got published in 2010. This paperback edition was published by Penguin India in 2000.
