Overview: The Crucible

The Crucible is a four-act play written by Arthur Miller and is based in the close-knit town of Salem, in Massachusetts. When Reverend Parris's daughter Betty falls sick all of a sudden, rumours start flying that she has been affected by witchcraft. Betty and her cousin Abigail, along with a slave named Tituba, were caught dancing in the forest by Parris the night before. Soon he finds out that Tituba is capable of communicating with the dead using witchcraft, and hence his suspicions are further fueled. Tituba also names a few other women in the town of being involved in witchcraft and then a trial ensues.

The writer then goes on to intricately weave a set of mysteries that unfold slowly, shocking everyone in Salem, as well as the audience. The play was much ahead of its time and was loved by people all over. The cliffhanger in every act ensures that men and women were totally engrossed in the play to find out what the truth really is. Are the girls lying about the night in the forest? Who else is involved in the alleged act of witchcraft? What is Abigail's secret, which she guards so zealously?

Often considered as one of the greatest dramatists in the world, Arthur Miller's career in writing spanned almost seven decades, during which he wrote famous plays such as All My Sons and Death of a Salesman. The writer has won several awards including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama as well as a number of Tony awards. Today, he continues to be a source of inspiration for modern playwrights and his plays are still enacted to honour his memory.
