     A pleasant enough tale/// 17 December, 2013 On
Danny, a seven-year-old boy eagerly awaiting a new brother or sister, ends up with both in Sandra M. Jones’s picture book Danny’s Special Day.

Danny wakes to find his mother at the breakfast table, almost ready to give birth. Danny is ready to help by boiling water and calling the midwife, but his father tells him they will be going to the hospital instead. Everyone rushes to the hospital and, as the book tells us, “Three hours later, Dennis and Denise were born.”

Danny’s Special Day aims to relate the excitement preceding the arrival of a new brother or sister, but it does so only in the most immediate terms---Mom is going to have this baby now. There’s no explanation (or illustration) of why Danny is so eager for a sibling, no talk of the original plan to use a midwife, or any of the goings-on at the hospital; we jump from Danny shouting “Drive faster, Dad! Drive faster!” on one page, to the babies, clad in diapers, meeting Danny for the first time, on the final page. The climax passes without a clear sign that it’s there, and after using most of the book to set up the journey to the hospital, it seems rushed, wrapping everything up in one page and a couple of sentences.

The illustrations also miss on the storytelling at times. For example, there’s a random-seeming page picturing Danny’s dog, adjacent to a page with an illustration of Danny’s mom rising from the table on her way to the car.

This is a quick and pleasant enough tale, but it feels like a lost opportunity. Danny seems to be in the dark about the whole process of having a baby, even at the end of the book. In sum, while Danny’s Special Day is a noble effort, it is ultimately lacking in its appeal for children.
