Overview: Dasha Avatar

Dasha Avatar:The Ten Incarnations of Lord Vishnu is authored by Anant Pai. Pai, better known as Uncle Pai was a famous educationalist and creator of comic strips. He left a significant mark in the sphere of comics in India. Pai is remembered for his immortal creation of Amar Chitra Katha, a comic book series that presents mythological stories in a unique and simpler manner to acquaint readers with Indias cultural history. He was also the founder and editor of Tinkle, a magazine with comic strips and stories intended for kids. Pai came up with the idea of starting a series of comic books while working as a junior executive with The Times of India. He drew inspiration from the Indrajal Comics and started Amar Chitra Katha in 1967.

According to the Hindu mythological belief, a supreme power is born on earth periodically, in varied forms to eradicate evils from the world. Sometimes it comes in the form of human beings, sometimes in the form of animals. These reincarnated forms of the supreme power are known as Avatars. The concept of Avatar is associated with the measurement of time mentioned in Hindu theology. Hindus believe that the measurement of time depends upon the working day of Lord Brahma.

The Bhagwat Purana calls the creation of earth by Brahma Kalpa and its dissolution by him, Pralaya. According to it, each Kalpa equals one day, while each Pralaya is equal to one night in the daily life of Lord Brahma. Mythology claims that each Kalpa and each Pralaya spans 4320 million years. Each Kalpa comprises four ages or Yugas. These Yugas have their own names - Kali, Satya, Dwapara and Treta. Of all the avatars of the Hindu God, ten are considered to be most important and significant. These ten avatars are called Dasha Avatar. The story of each of these avatars and the successive reincarnation of Lord Vishnu has been presented with great artistic excellence.

The editions of Amar Chitra Katha have been adored for ages. Having been around for half a century, its not uncommon to see some issues passed down through generations, from parent to child. Published by Amar Chitra Katha, the 32-page paperback edition of the book has the ISBN 10 number 8175080795 and ISBN 13 number 9788175080799.
