Overview: Difficult Daughters

Difficult Daughters is a fictional tale about a girl who wants to study and make an independent career of her own, but is stuck in a dilemma about her love life. This moving and heartbreaking story is set in Amritsar at the time of the partition. It finely portrays the struggle of an Indian woman, especially at a time when women hardly had any say, even in matters regarding their own lives. Written by Manju Kapoor, the book has won the Commonwealth Writers Prize in 1999.

Virmati is a young Punjabi girl from a very conservative family of Amritsar. She wants to study, acquire knowledge and build a career. But something unavoidable happens in her life, and she has to give up either of the two she desires the most: education and love. She falls in love with a man who lives in her neighborhood. He is a professor and is married. Eventually, he marries Virmati but the first wife remains dissatisfied and furious. Virmati continues to face troubles and mental tortures. She heaves a sigh of relief when her husband lets her continue her studies in Lahore, but her battle for an independent existence continues. Narrated by her daughter, the story is heart-wrenching and sympathetic. The story captures every minute details that portray the sufferings and the struggles. Did she ever manage to get out of the cage? If she did, then how? The growth of this once-timid and naive girl into a mature woman is an inspiring story.

Manju Kumar is a Commonwealth Writers Prize winner for the year 1999. She is one of the young promising Indian authors. A resident of New Delhi, Manju has written four novels till now. Her book, A Married Woman is called fluent and witty, and The Immigrant has been shortlisted for the DSC Prize of the South Asian Literature.
