More commonly referred to as DDLJ, it is one of India's most iconic love stories. the 1995 Hindi rom com film has all the elements of a classic Bollywood film - many believe that it established the signature elements thet influence Indian cinema to this day. DDLJ marked the incredibly successfully screenplay and directorial debut of Aditya Chopra, and also established Shahrukh Khan's legacy as a star of romantic films. Shahrukh Khan (who plays Raj Malhotra) comes from a liberal home, making him a carefree adventurous soul. Whereas Simran Singh (played by Kajol), comes from a strict, conservative home. Both are set for a vacation to Europe, and after meeting each other in a chance encounter, get to know each through a series of adventurous experiences across Europe.
The movie was considered ahead of its time, as it showed a new Indian generation that was shedding the baggage of useless Indian norms, but still respecting its culture and ideals. Filmed in India, the UK, and Switzerland, the film was decalred the year's biggest hit, and racked up 10 Filmfare Awards (a record for a single film at the time), and a National Film Award for 'Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.' Today, it finds mention in many lists of iconic Bollywood films, including the British Film Institute's list of leading Indian cinema. It is also India's longest-running film in theaters, and was still playing in Mumbai in 2013.
