The Elephant; the Tiger & the Cellphone is a book written by Indian politician and noted writer Shashi Tharoor. The book is available online in the paperback format. It was published on 23rd July 2012 by Penguin India Publication Ltd.
In the book, the author speaks about how far India has come in terms of economy, literacy and politics. According to Tharoor, India was earlier associated with a sombre and soporific elephant, comfortably lazing on the achievements of centuries gone by, since more than four decades after independence. However, in the 1990s, the hibernating animal seems to have woken up from his sleep. Now, many see India as transforming from a drowsy elephant to a vicious and hungry tiger. So what is store for India in the twenty-first century? Will it combine the strength of a tiger and the size of an elephant to become a dominant nation in the world? Or will India continue to be an inactive elephant in the eyes of the developed countries? In this volume that serves as a companion to his bestselling novel, India: From Midnight to the Millenium and Beyond, Shashi Tharoor provides an in-depth analysis on the forces that have made India a progressive country in the twenty-first century.
