The Tainted Throne is the fourth book of the Empire of the Moghuls series. It was authored by the husband and wife duo, Diana and Michael Preston, and went to publication under the pseudonym, Alex Rutherford. The book was published by the Headline Review publication house on the 1st of May 2012. The book continues the saga of the Mughal empire under the Jahangir and his struggle for power with his traitorous sons.

Diana and Michael Preston are Oxford graduates with history and English as their respective majors. They are both prolific writers and have penned numerous works of fiction and nonfiction both individually and together, under the pseudonym of Alex Rutherford. Both of them are globe trotters have toured over a 140 countries in search for new material for their books. Their love for stories and travel have often landed them into exotic vistas as diverse as the Hindu Kush and the Ross Sea.

The Empire of the Moghul series is based around the rise and the subsequent demise of the Moghul Empire in early modern India. It starts with the book �Raiders of the North� which traces the footsteps of Babur, who later became the first Mughal emperor, from Samarkand in Uzbekistan and over the Hindu Kush to Afghanistan and into the northern plains of India. The Tainted Throne is the fourth book of this series, which portrays the tumultuous power struggles Jahangir has to endure when his son Khurram, takes up arms against his father, in a quest to dethrone him and proclaim himself as the sole heir to the Mughal Empire. Jahangir is depicted as a dissipated man, desperately trying to cling to reins of power while being under assault by his sons.

The Empire of the Moghul series has been critically acclaimed by reviewers for its mix of authentic historical facts and thriller-like feel. Bestselling author Wilbur Smith called the narrative �totally absorbing�, while publications like Hindustan Times and The Indian Express said that the books were a �must-pick� and praised the authors for the atmosphere of drama and tension they have been able to create.
