Overview: The Fifth Mountain

The Fifth Mountain is a novel written by the Brazilian author Paulo Coelho and is based on the story of prophet Elijah from the bible. The events in the book take place in 870 B.C., where a young Elijah is on the run to save his life as he denounces the false gods of Phoenicia. The angel of God then orders him to cross the desert and seek refuge in Zarephath, which is also called Akbar by its inhabitants. Here, Elijah befriends a widow and lodges in her house. A turn of events then puts Elijah in trouble and he is condemned to climb the Fifth Mountain to be punished.

Elijah has always complied with God's wishes and done what was asked of him. But over time, he realizes that his destiny should be in his own hands and he thereby, decides to abide by his own will. The resulting change that Elijah goes through, and his overall spiritual epiphany is what makes this book interesting. Shedding light on matters of self-confidence and internal happiness, The Fifth Mountain is a book about giving true meaning to one's life and not giving up easily.

Paulo Coelho, whose book The Alchemist became a best seller and was translated into 80 different languages, also wrote other books such as Brida and Eleven Minutes. A writer of immense knowledge, Coelho's books are manifestations of his own emotions and reflect his thirst for true joy.
