Overview: Geetanjali

Geetanjali or song offerings is a collection of prose by Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) who won the Nobel prize for literature in 1913 and 1923. The original Bengali collection consists of 157 poems while the English version of Geetanjali incorporates 103 poems of Tagore's own English translations of its Bengali counterpart. Famous worldwide and now widely translated, Geetanjali is composed from the words "geet" meaning song and "anjali" meaning offering and thus meaning "An offering of songs". In Bengali, the world anjali has a strong devotional connotation which has led many to believe that Geetanjali is a collection of poems that are chiefly prayer offerings.

Tagore was spontaneous, sensitive, deep and insightful: a trait that's ever so evident in his poems and his translations. The translations were often radical, almost leaving out large chunks of the poem- in one instance one can also see fusing of two separate poems (song 95 unifies 89,90)- but beautiful nevertheless. In 1913, Tagore became the first non-European to win the Nobel prize for literature- and largely for his English Geetanjali.

Rabindranath Tagore modernised Bengali art by doing away with rigid classical forms and resisting linguistic structures: his stories, novels, dance-dramas, songs and essays spoke of topics political and personal. Geetanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced), and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) are his best-known works. Lyricism, colloquialism, naturalism, and unnatural contemplation laced his works, making it literature that was ahead of its time. Two nations chose Tagore's compositions as their national anthems: India's Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar Bangla.
