Overview: Gideon's Spies: The Secret History of the Mossad

Mossad, Israel's intelligence agency, was established in 1951 in order to ensure the embattled country's future. In fact, the Mossad was responsible for a lot of daring and awesome exploits of espionage, assassination and counterterrorism, ever ventured. Gideon's Spies:The Secret History of the Mossad is a book penned by the Welsh writer Gordon Thomas and published in 1999. The material for the work was gathered from secret interviews between Thomas and several Mossad agents, spymasters, informants as well as from classified documents and other covert sources.

According to the book, there was a Mossad agent in the White House when Clinton was the American President and through him Israel could call the shots while the peace process in the Middle East was going on. Nuclear secrets were taken out of USA clandestinely and used to initiate Israel's program to manufacture nuclear weapons; before Kenneth Starr had even heard about Monica Lewinsky, the Mossad had in their possession recorded tapes of President Clinton conversing rather intimately with his secret lover. It is claimed that Mossad kept these tapes safely to protect its mole, code named Mega, within the White House. By revealing such dark secrets, Gideon's Spies tells us of what Mossad truly is, as an agency that is brilliant, flawed, ruthless and incredible.

The last revelation was hotly denied by the Clinton administration and David Bar-Illan, spokesman for the Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu. Now the question arises, "Whom to trust?" The words of the administration officials cannot be taken at their face value as they often lie, and as for Israel, the country has never acknowledged its spy operations. However, according to the Starr report, Monica Lewinsky is quoted as stating that President Clinton "suspected that a foreign embassy (he refrained from naming the agency) was tapping his telephones."

However critics are of the opinion that Thomas's unverifiable contentions are largely unverifiable and as such he cannot inspire confidence in his readers. After reading the work, it seems that the author's sole aim in the writing the book was to persuade the readers that political realities are not what they seem to be, but the reverse of what people know as truth.
