Gippi released on 10th May 2013, under the Dharma Production banner. Produced by Karan Johar and Directed by Sonam Nair, it is a Hindi drama film which is a movie meant for teens. It has entire teen masala, starting from romance to cheesy humour, a makeover to loud music. It is a full package and a credible flick in 'coming-of-age' movies. It is shot direct from the bosom; very simple, sweet and heart whelming piece of cinema. It helps teenagers and adults reconnect as it takes adults down their memory lane. Gippi failed to make a mark on the box office even though it released under such a big banner. The reason could be that it wasn't properly advertise, but Gippi is a must watch for all the teenagers as it makes you feel comfortable under your own skin.
Gippi is about a 14 year old girl who resides in Shimla along with her mom, Pappi and her younger brother Booboo. Gippi is a fatso who is overweight and awkward looking. She is clueless about handling her emotional, physical and social changes that her adolescents have in store for her. At home she is made fun of for not having periods. At school she occupies a back bench and is most of the times seen bullied by the star queen of the class Shamira.
She lives in a broken home and has no clue about how to deal with the situation. When all this is already going on in her life she falls in love with an older guy, Arjun, who is a famous heart breaker. Her love story comes to an early end. She is made humiliated and publically made fun of for the same. In the meantime Shamira challenges her to contest school elections against her. Gippi accepts the challenge and stands out victorious.
In the journey to become the school's head girl, Gippi makes sure she has the best time of her life. She is seen moving around in the movie having world's best desserts, making fun of the teachers, having school crushes and dancing on Shammi Kapoor's tracks. "Gippi" marks the story of a, ordinary fat, awkward looking girl who was not comfortable in her skin initially. But in the due course of the movie she learns how to love life exactly the way she is. It is basically a story of an underdog, who pushes herself up from nothing and finds herself on top of the world. She is the most comfortable and confident person on the earth by the end of the flick, who loves herself for who she is.
Gippi is a must watch for all the teenagers to learn how to cope up with the adolescent changes and to make them feel good about their own selves later in life. Gippi starts Riya Vij, Taaha Shah and Divya Datta. The music is amazing given by Vishal-Shekhar, nice feet tapping songs. Highly recommended!
