The American drama sitcom that went on to become one of the longest-running live-action sitcoms and one of most loved shows among the black community enters its fourth season. Joan Carol Clayton, Esq. (played by Tracee Ellis Ross): the group�s mother figure, who cares about her friends � even ignoring her own many issues. Maya Denise Wilkes (played by Golden Brooks): Joan�s former assistant, Maya is a housewife and an author from Compton, California. While she is married and has a child, she is incredibly sassy and outspoken. Nonetheless, she also has a traditional side as a good mother, wife and a religious person. Lynn Ann Searcy (played by Persia White): Joan ex-roommate from when they were students at UCLA, she lived with Joan for 8 years prior to the show�s launch. Highly educated, but can be a bit crazy. Antoinette "Toni" Marie Childs Garrett (played by Jill Marie Jones, Seasons 1-6): Joan's childhood friend and college buddy, she is considered both selfish and popular. William Jerrowme Dent, Esq. (played by Reggie Hayes): the closest guy friend that the four girls have, he is a high powered executive.Monica Charles Brooks-Dent (played by Keesha Sharp): William's wife, and hated by all the show�s leading women.
Darnell Leroy Wilkes (played by Flex Alexander Season 1, Khalil Kain seasons 2-8): Maya's husband, he went from being an airport baggage handler to an highly qualified mechanic. The characters all have unique and sensitive personalities, and instead of generic �cookie-cutter� descriptions, they all have shades of gray, and which makes them even more engrossing as the dynamics between them changes and evolves across the seasons. Over the years, it has won several awards, including Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and NAACP Image Awards � most of which went to Tracee�s portrayal of Joan.
