Developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, the God of War: Ascension Standard Edition (PS3) is a third person, action-adventure video game and the seventh instalment in the God of War series.
Being a prequel to the entire gaming series, its storyline explains well about how the legendary Kratos landed up with misery and pain, in the edge of madness. With vengeance as the central theme of the plot, the God of War: Ascension speaks about Kratos' quest for freedom, redemption and revenge. The game is set in ancient Greece that is fully occupied with various Olympian Gods and Titans, as well as other beings from Greek mythology. It takes place in over a period of four weeks and switches between the past and the present, several times. The player can control Kratos in both the narratives. It can be played in both single and multi-player modes, making it the first game in the series to feature an online multi-player mode, i.e. up to eight players, for both competitive and cooperative play style. Though the gameplay is similar to the earlier games in the God of War series, this game mainly concentrates on combo-based combat action. It also features various puzzles and platforming elements with an upgraded combat system and new game play mechanics.
Battle with ruthless and terrific foes, including Cyclopes, Cerberuses, empusas, sirens, Gorgons, Satyrs, Harpies and Centaurs, as well as with whopping monsters such as parasitic insects, elephantaur, wild hounds, stone talos, wraiths and manticores. Unlock new customization options for your multi-player Gladiator, by aligning yourself for Zeus, Ares, Poseidon or Hades and earn their Favor. The Blades of Chaos, a pair of blades that is wrapped around Kratos' arms, are his main weapons. They can be swung around in different manoeuvres for self-defence, as well as to combat with enemies.
The storyline traces the journey of Kratos, who is the protagonist and former servant of Ares, the God of War. In the name of moulding him into a heartless killing machine, Ares tricks him into killing his wife and child, who were the only people he loved in his entire life. When he realized about the unintentional and accidental murder he committed, Kratos, unable to forgive himself, renounces Ares, breaks his blood oath to the God and vows never to serve him again. This leads to his imprisonment by the three Furies, who are the guardians of honour and enforcers of punishment. Orkos, the oath keeper comes to his rescue and helps him to escape. Kratos overcomes all the illusions and other troubles that were laid in front of him. He defeats the Furies, but begins to suffer the nightmares that afflict him throughout his adventures.
Throughout the game, the player can use his fists to attack, if he/she does not wield any weapon. The primary weapon of Kratos, Blades of Chaos, was given by Ares as a symbol of his servitude. This game also includes some World Weapons such as swords, spears, clubs, shields, and slings.
The God of War: Ascension Standard Edition (PS3) is designed with various interesting, magical elements, including the Fire of Ares, Ice of Poseidon, Lightning of Zeus and Soul of Hades.
Weaved with some historical artefacts, like the Archimedes' Treatise, Boat Captain's Idol, Aletheia's Charm, Circe's Vial, Antikythera Mechanism, Prisoner's Oath Stone and Oracle Seeker's Offering, this PlayStation 3 game will stir up your archaeological interest.
