Overview: The Golden Notebook

The Golden Notebook is a work of fiction by British writer Doris Lessing; that narrates the story of a woman searching for her true happiness amidst personal and professional crisis. Anna Wulf is a writer who records her life in four notebooks. These notebooks are coloured as per the experiences she notes down in them: in the black notebook, Anna lists her experiences before and after the second world war, in the red one, her experiences as a communist party member are noted down, whereas in the yellow one, her own love life and its sad ending is written in the form of an ongoing novel and in the blue one, Anna notes down her special dreams and memories along with her deepest fears and emotional turmoil.

Anna calls the fifth golden-coloured notebook, Free Woman, in which she tries to put the strands together, trying eventually to culminate the things she recorded in the other four notebooks. The story is intricately constructed and has a layered structure, wherein the narrative moves in and out of Anna's experiences from the four notebooks, leading up to her loss of grip over reality. We thereby learn that mental breakdowns are important sometimes to free oneself from illusions and also to aid in the process of internal healing.

Born in 1919, Doris Lessing started writing at the age of 15 and published her first novel; The Grass is Singing, in 1950. She also went by her pen name of Jane Somers, and published two novels, The Diary of a Good Neighbour, and If the Old Could under the pseudonym. Lessing passed away in 2013, but not before she had written more than 50 novels, which are considered as some of the finest works in English literature. In 2007, she won the Nobel Prize in Literature along with several other awards including Somerset Maugham Award in 1954 and David Cohen Award in 2001.
