Santhini Govindan is known for her works in children literature. She has authored various books like Asoka's Diary, Animal Tales From Indian Mythology, and The Magical Maratha. She is a recipient of a fellowship awarded by the Government of India for writing historical fiction for children.

The tales of Panchatantra are mainly developed around various animals. According to folklore, King Amar Shakti requested Pandit Vishnu Sharma to train his sons and endow them with knowledge, education and wisdom. Sharma agreed to train the princes over a course of six months. Over this period, he taught them moral values, ethics and principles through various short yet alluring tales. The princes were taught about the importance of humanity and honesty, and the significance of relationships and friendship. The book contains interesting stories centring around animal characters that teach readers various lessons about life to help them become good human beings.
