Overview: Gone with the Wind

Gone with the Wind is a novel that was published in 1936. Written against the backdrop of the American Civil War and the reconstruction period, Margaret Mitchell's novel is a true literary classic. This unforgettable tale talks of love and loss, racial discord and the effects of the American Civil war. Above all, it paints an epic love story of two star-crossed lovers, Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler. Exploring the tragedies and comedies of human existence, Gone with the Wind draws readers into the character's lives.

This book details brief but vivid descriptions of the Southern plantations and the employment of slaves. It is the spring of 1861, and Scarlett O'Hara, a lovely Southern girl, has dreams of escaping the boring plantation fields for a rich future. After Ashley, her main suitor marries his cousin, Scarlett is forced to accept a marriage proposal from Charlie Hamilton. Charlie dies of measles, leaving Scarlett to look after their only child. The latter part of the novel centres on the war and her return to her old village. Towards the end, Scarlett manages to rekindle her relationship with Rhett, whom she met years before. A romantic tale with the occasional twist of murder, this book is interesting right to the end.

Margaret Mitchell was born in Atlanta, Georgia. Having heard firsthand accounts of American history from her grandparents and relatives, she decided to pen down the content into a book. Gone With The Wind was Mitchell's sole publication. The book sold over ten million copies and was translated in eighteen languages. She also won the reputed Pulitzer Prize. Gone With The Wind was adapted into a movie script, and is still considered as one of the most successful films ever made. A paperback version of this book is available on India with the ISBN-10 number of 0330323490 and ISBN-13 number of 978-0330323499.
