Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the seventh game of the Grand Theft Auto title, and this game was published by Rockstar Games. The game follows the protagonist CJ (Carl Johnson, a young African American gang member) who can be played from third person perspective, as he wanders around in an open-world environment, completing various missions, for different people throughout the game.
The game is similar to the previous GTA titles, but is grander in many respects (size of the world, number of characters). It also features several new abilities for the protagonist (he can now swim and climb walls), and also includes many new vehicles to be stolen (there are nearly 240 vehicles in the game).
CJ returns to Los Santos when he hears from his brother that his mother has been murdered. Shortly after leaving the airport, CJ is implicated for the murder of Officer Pendlebury, by a corrupt group of officers who had actually committed that murder. They threaten to frame CJ for the murder, unless he plays along.
Tenpenny implicates Carl in the murder of a police officer, Officer Pendlebury, that Tenpenny himself committed, as he was on the verge of exposing him, and threatens to frame him for it if he does not co-operate with them.
What follows is a complicated story that unravels the reasons for his mother's murder, with many smaller story arcs. These include gang wars, espionage, drug dealings, and a music career, all leading up to the grand finale.
At the very beginning, only Los Santos and neighbouring areas are open, but the more missions you complete, the more places you can unlock. The game appears to take place somewhere similar to California and Nevada. The three major cities, Los Santos (Los Angeles), San Fierro (San Francisco) and Las Venturas (Las Vegas) all correspond to real American cities. In addition, the rural areas around these three cities *12 rural towns and the villages of three counties (Red, Flint, and Bone) are also available for exploring. Other important places are Sherman Dam (based on the Hoover Dam), Area 69 (based on Area 51), and Vinewood (based on Hollywood). When fully unlocked, San Andreas covers an area of 13.9 square miles (36 square kilometres). The three cities are linked by numerous highways, a train system, and air travel.
There are a wide variety of diverse characters in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Many of the characters are specific to the city or area that CJ is in. Los Santos, for example, is the home of the GSF (CJ's gang), the Vagos, and the Ballas, while the Triads are more prominent in Las Venturas, and the San Fierra Rifa keep to San Fierra. This allows for a more intricate story line.
Young Maylay makes his debut performance as the protagonist, Carl (CJ). The game has a vast voice-cast (there are 861 credited voice actors) with quite a few stars like David Cross, Andy Dick, Ron Foster, Samuel L. Jackson, James Woods, Peter Fonda, Charlie Murphy, Frank Vincent, Chris Penn, Danny Dyer, Sara Tanaka, William Fichtner, Wil Wheaton, rappers Ice-T, Chuck D, Frost, MC Eiht and The Game and musicians George Clinton, Axl Rose, Sly and Robbie, and Shaun Ryder.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the video game with the largest voice cast (according to The Guinness World Records 2009 Gamer's Edition), with 861 credited voice actors, including 174 actors and 687 additional performers. Many of them were fans of Grand Theft Auto, and wanted to perform for it.
