Overview: Grandmothers Tale

The Grandmothers Tale and Selected Stories contains some intriguing stories written by R.K. Narayan. Stories in the novella are told by the grandmother of the narrator. The main story in this book is that of grandmothers mom and her adventures when she gets married at the innocent age of 7.

The story tracks her abandonment after marriage and how she shows relentless courage to track her husband and free him from the clutches of his new wife. However, as soon as she completes her mission, she finds that her freedom is now curbed. This story is what is referred to in the title as The Grandmothers Tale.

In addition to that, it has other selected stories which are equally intriguing, dealing with complex human emotions. It talks about the story of a storyteller whose mysterious source of tales dries up; it has the tale of a husband who must have sex with a harlot in order to save his ailing wife, and it also has the charming story of a coddled child who learns that his doting uncle may, in fact, be a charlatan or even a killer. Each of the stories written in The Grandmothers Tale and Selected Stories has irony as their hook and cynical characters as the driving force.

While the stories written by R.K. Narayan have an Indian background, they have a universal appeal because they deal with human emotions. This book again establishes the signature storytelling style of the renowned author who has 5 decades of work behind him. Some of his other celebrated work include Swami and Friends, Malgudi Adventures, and The English Teacher. This book has been published by Ecco and is available to order online. The paperback edition of the book is listed with ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 number of 978-0880016247.
