Overview: Grapes of Wrath

The Grapes of Wrath is a fiction novel based on the lives during the Great Depression. The book covers the toils and troubles faced by the downtrodden and the victims of this misery. Written by John Steinback, the story is set in 1930s on the lives of those migrating for promised lands. It created a controversy when published for the first time in 1939, but the epic tale of sufferings and struggles is the winner of 1939 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

The Great Depression has struck the lives in Oklahoma, badly. Worsening the situation is the Dust Bowl, a dust storm that destroyed the ecology and agricultural land. It leads to a disastrous and tragic consequence making the residents leave their homes and travel west. The Joads family is one of the affected families, and Tom Joad is the protagonist of the story. As he leaves with his family for the promised land in California, Tom faces the hard facts and realities of life.

The story portrays the differences and conflicts between people belonging to different classes - powerful and powerless. The horror resulting from the catastrophe triggers the poor ones to fight for justice, women's to fight for their social strata and most importantly for equality.

The Grapes of Wrath is a shocking, intense and heart-wrenching. Through the life of the protagonist, the author has projected the lives dependent upon false hopes and thwarted desires that end in broken dreams. The drama is the crux of the story that speaks of the hardship and how the victims live with it.
