A romantic Bollywood classic, "Guide" (the film) was released in the year 1965. The movie is based on R.K. Narayan's critically acclaimed novel, "the Guide" and was listed among the top Bollywood Classics in a rating released by the Times Group. The movie was also written by Pearl S. Buck for its U.S. Version and was screened 42 years after its original release at the Cannes Film Festival in the year 2007. The U.S. version was directed and produced by Tad Danielewski. This is a great achievement in itself that the well known Hollywood artists made their version of an Indian Classic. Directed by the great Indian Filmmaker, Vijay Anand, the movie was a hit on box office and was, in many a ways, a peak point in Indian cinema. It is considered to be a masterpiece of the Indian Film Industry.
The plot is fascinating and interesting. It also depicts the lives of the have nots and the narrow mindset of people who refuse to change with changing times. The protagonist of the film are Rosie and Raju. Rosie is a pretty daughter of a prostitute, and after suffering at the hands of the society, has managed to uplift her living standards and has gained respect in society by marrying a wealthy and amiable man named Marco. Rosie has a passion for dancing but is never supported to pursue it because her husband, Marco, is against this monopoly of beggars and harlots.
Marco is a well off archaeologist and wishes to do research on caves outside of his city. He hires Raju, a tourist guide, to help him out. Marco loses himself into his work and Raju gets to spend time with Rosie as her tourist guide and a newly found supportive friend. Raju admires Rosie's dancing abilities and her passion and he adores her for her innocence. Rosie, being sick of her life with Marco, attempts suicide in vain which only leads Marco to call her names and push him farther away. Marco indulges in an affair with a local girl and upon learning this, Rosie argues with him and leaves him, rendering herself homeless. Raju offers shelter to her, inspite of his mother and brother insisting on kicking her out. Despite of his facing innumerable problems due to his association with Rosie (who was taken to be a prostitute by the whole town), Raju kept motivating her and helped her rise as a successful actress and dancer. As Rosie attains stardom, Raju falls prey to gambling. Later, he is given a two year prison sentence for forging Rosie's signatures.
So, why does he really forge his beloved Rosie's signatures? Moreover, what happens to him after his prison sentence is over? Do Raju and Rosie ever get back together? Watch the movie to find out more and lose yourself to the amazing screenplay and picturisation.
