The Plot Of The Movie

Ethan Mascarenhas (Hrithik Roshan) is a quadriplegic patient, and has been on the chair for the past fourteen years. Taking care of him for the past twelve years is his nurse, Sofia D'Souza, played by Aishwarya Rai. Life starts to seem to be meaningless and more of a burden to others for Ethan. Finally, he decides to appeal for mercy killing. It is, indeed, a very tough decision but considering his situation everyone supports him. His mother, played by Nafisa Ali, supports and backs his son in filing the petition. However, his appeal is dismissed. Then, his friend and lawyer, Devyani Dutta suggests him to gather public support through his radio program. Ethan names the program as "Project Euthanasia." Meanwhile, Ethan gets to relive his life as a magician when a young man passionate about learning magic from him enters his life. The young man, played by Aditya Roy Kapoor, brings back the magician in Ethan. By now, his radio program is in the limelight, and he decides to file a petition again. Again, his appeal is rejected, and his mother passes away. During this hard time, Sofia stands by his side and decides to stay with him and help him with the mercy killing. By and by, they fall in love and face all the challenges with a smile and by being at each other's side. The movie ends at a note that surely makes every audience weep with a smile on their faces because by now Ethan is free from the lifeless living.

  1.  A shallow take on a serious subject 10 April, 2013 On
I have always liked the films of Sanjay Leela Bansali especially Black, HDDCS and Devdas. Fortunately, I gave his last film, Saawariya, a miss. This time, with Aishwarya and Hrithik in the lead, I couldn’t give Guzaarish a miss. And it turned out to be a big disappointment! The movie takes up a serious issue like Euthanasia and treats it in such a shallow manner that you almost feel offended. You never feel connected or empathetic to the lead character. Random characters are introduced for 5-10 minutes that have no relevance to the story (e.g., Hrithik’s girlfriend, his best friend of the past) and are as easily forgotten. The courtroom scenes are ridiculous to say the least. The movie should be charged for contempt of court for depicting our legal system in such a manner. None of the characters are properly developed and you never quite understand their motivation for what they are doing. There are a few nice moments in the movie that touch you. But by the time you are through the final sleep-inducing speech of Hrithik, it is hard to remember any of them.
