Overview: The Help

The Help is a story about three extraordinary women and their determination to cause a drastic change in their town. Set in 1962, in the city of Mississippi, the story can inspire many women. Skeeter is a Twenty two year old who upon finishing her graduation from Ole Miss, returns home. Even though she has a degree her mother states that she will not be satisfied until Skeeter is married. Skeeter often found comfort with her favorite maid Constantine who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared. No one is telling Skeeter where she has gone. The second protagonist is Aibileen, who is a wise black maid. She is raising her seventeenth white child. Her own son died while his bosses ignored the death. She is dedicated to the little girl she is looking after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken. The third protagonist is Minny, and she is Aibileen's best friend. She is a short, plump, and crazy woman. She can cook very well, but cannot mind her tongue, which costs her job. Minny finally starts working for someone new in town who does not know her reputation. However, she has no clue that her new boss has secrets of her own. These different women come together for a secret project that will put all three of them in danger. They question the lines that define their town and their era. The three women start their own movement to change their town, and also change the way women see one another as mothers, daughters, caregivers and friends. This is a deeply touching novel filled with humor and hope.

Kathryn Stockett is a graduate from the University of Alabama. Though she was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, after graduation, she moved to New York City. There she worked in a magazine publishing company and later as a marketing expert for 9 years. Currently, she resides in Atlanta with her husband. They have a daughter together.
