Overview: Hotel Calcutta

About the Book: Hotel Calcutta The century-old Hotel Calcutta run by an Englishman, is underthreat from land sharks who want to raze it and build a shoppingmall. As the staff stare at uncertain times, a monk turns up at thehotel and prophesies that the hotel will still stand only if a wallof stories can be built. Peter Dutta-the manager-though a littleunsure, is ready to give it a shot and begins looking for astoryteller. A painter, who has just stepped into the bar, volunteers to tell the first story. As the storytelling fever catches on, new guests arrive everyday, among them a shifty-eyed producer of porn flicks, an Americanwoman who hears the footsteps of a dead soldier in the corridor andfinally an odd pair who pretend to be war historians. 1.  Relish like wine 19 May, 2013 On Junglee.com
There are books and there are readers of various sorts and then there are patterns of conversation. There are books which a reader picks up and does not put down until she has finished reading. Then there are other books which when once put down is never looked at again. This is because the reader and the book fail to converse with each other.

There are readers who read a book like sipping a cup of wine, relishing every word as they read through, pondering over the life and characters in the book and the existential self. Books which trigger a stream of imagination, books which transport you to the stories they begin to tell and unfold. Where reader is also a storyteller. Hotel Calcutta is a fiction of this sort. As a reader you are drawn into the life of the stories unfolding here, you are not compelled to finish reading the book at one go. You wander through lanes of Calcutta and European suburbs, you pause to take a look at the masterpieces and gradually feel the sense of history strengthening, you wonder at the malicious attraction of nature, love and lust and value life. Hotel Calcutta has this immense strength of staying with you with every story you read. You know that the invisible wall which will save beauty and values is gradually building up as you move from one story to another. Hotel Calcutta is every traveller and story teller's delight!
