Overview: How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia

How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia is a tale of a man who builds an empire from nothing, selling an increasingly scarce and fluid resource of the world - water. The story revolves around a nameless youth brought up in utter poverty, in rising Asia and his love for a pretty girl. The ambitious hero's mind is set on amassing wealth, yet his heart draws him towards his lady love. Fate makes them meet time and again, not allowing the hero to banish her thoughts from his mind and soul.

The story is romantic without becoming sentimental. A combination of pathos and inventiveness, the author has left no stone unturned to make the story compelling.

The author, Mohsin Hamid's first novel Moth Smoke won him the Betty Trask Award and was in the league of finalists of the PEN/Hemingway Prize. His next book, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. The author is a regular contributor to Time, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. He lives in Lahore, Pakistan.

Mohsin Hamid is truly a gifted writer. His writing style is unique. After the success of his first two novels, ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’ and ‘Moth Smoke’, my expectations from his third were high and this book meets them.

This book ‘How to get filthy rich in rising Asia’ is different. It’s a rags-to-riches story written as a self-help book. The protagonist is ‘you’, your love ‘the pretty girl’ and the background – ‘an unnamed city in rising Asia’.

It is divided into twelve chapters, which are actually twelve steps which you should follow in order to reach the goal of become filthy rich. Each chapter with titles like -"Work for Yourself", "Don't Fall in Love", "Be Prepared to Use Violence", begins by saying that how this step is important in your life and with the author’s expertise the chapter evolves into a narrative as to what you are presently doing.

You don’t strictly follow the steps, you fall in love, but yours and the pretty girl’s paths don’t merge but keep on crossing from time to time.

The interactions between the main character that is ‘you’ and ‘the pretty girl’ form the emotional core of the narrative. It’s a love story as much as it is a success story.

In this novel, the author has been successful in penning down the thoughts and actions of the youth in rising Asia. Both the characters - ‘you’ and ‘the pretty girl’ have been perfectly imagined and written.
Additionally, the city has not been forgotten. As ‘you’ grow up, how the unnamed city changes over the years has also been shown.

In short, the author’s command over the language and excellent narration has made it a great book.

Finally, I would like to say that these pieces of literature are not meant to be missed, so add this book to your reading list right away.
