I See the Moon Overview
What is the Moon like tonight? Will it look as round as a shiny balloon, floating way up high? Or will there be a crescent like a silver saucer low down in the sky? Come on let’s take a peep outside. But let’s be quiet. Others might be looking too. Turn the pages to see the Moon's many enchanting phases from a horned crescent to the plump-faced Man in the Moon, from the icy crystal ring round the Moon to a dark orange eclipse watched by Owl, Beaver, Koala, Spider Monkey and other creatures around the globe. The final scene has a surprise in store! Brief science notes make this a perfect introduction to the night sky 0for very young readers. The book includes end notes on What is the Moon?, Phases of the Moon, Moonlight, Eclipses of the Moon, and Exploring the Moon. Editorial Reviews Gr 2 4—An unidentified narrator beckons readers into the night, telling of the Moon's various phases and showing a number of different animals' nighttime activities. Text and watercolor and ink illustrations depict a rabbit nibbling on grass, an owl about to pounce on a mouse, a beaver building his dam, and a polar bear hunting seals with her cubs. Above, the Moon is shown varyingly in full, half, and crescent shapes, and in eclipse. The tale ends with a view of Earth seen from an astronaut's visit to the Moon. Unfortunately, the natural, monthly progression of the Moon is not followed in a clear manner, and the animals' geographical habitats are not indicated. Most readers will find this mix too confusing as a story and too vague for informational purposes. A final spread provides brief facts about the Moon.—Barbara Elleman, Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, Amherst, MA
