Overview: The Inscrutable Americans

The Inscrutable Americans is a fiction novel about a man's journey from a small town in India to the high-rises of America. Written by Anurag Mathur, the book expresses the feelings of being alienated in a foreign land where there is none but differently looking and differently behaving people all around you. The culture-shock that the protagonist faces is hilarious, and the discovery of the real America is astounding.

Gopal, smart but naive, arrives at New York City for his chemical engineering course. Baffled by the shining concrete jungle, the crowd-mix and the food habits, the protagonist finds himself lost and estranged. It is funny how he misunderstands others due to their accent, which is so not familiar with him, and vice versa. The culture has been a good reason for all the frustration that piles up in him as he stays. Amusing the readers, the story continues to tickle the ribs as he comes across foods, such as a hot dog that disgusts him, half-naked girls, huge explicit billboards, crazy gadgets, etc.

Gopal has always had an overview of America that it is the richest country where everybody has a car and no one is poor. But as he gets to sink in the environment of this ever-glittering life on the outside, he discovers the other side:people living in extreme poverty, racism, girls being misused and the real America.

Anurag Mathur has convincingly portrayed the experiences of a foreigner in a foreign land. He keeps the readers interested with the humour, comic incidents and the dark truths that prevail everywhere despite the perception the world has about the riches of the country. 22 Days in India and Making the minister smile are some of the famous works of this Indian author, who has been regularly contributing to the magazines and newspapers with his writings.
