Overview: Istanbul

Istanbul: Memories And The City is written by Orhan Pamuk and published by Faber Publications. The book is an autobiographical account of the authors childhood and youth as well as his impressions of Istanbuls culture.

This novel blends the life of the writer and the city in a truly natural and exciting style. Istanbul: Memories And The City is the summoning of a city that is both scenic and affectionate. Written in a melancholic manner, the author describes his life and how the changes in the city have shaped his views and perceptions of the city. This volume is a personal memoir and provides us with information about prominent writers and authors who are in some way associated with the city of Istanbul.

The story revolves around the author who as a serious child lives among a complicated family. The entire family is ruled by the grandmother, who, in spite of being frail and bedridden complains that her sons are wasting away the familys wealth. The author further explains the working of his dysfunctional family as his childhood is filled with routinely witnessing his aunts fight and his parents marriage collapse. Frustrated with his life, the author creates an alter ego of himself and pulls the readers into his depressing, gloomy house that is crammed with formal yet comfortable furniture. The surroundings and the pop culture of Istanbul in the sixties and the eighties have been accurately captured and described in the book. Using the pen as a magic wand, the author weaves a majestic narrative about a city that is amazing and beautiful with all its customs and traditions intact.

The author, Orhan Pamuk, is a Turkish writer and screenwriter. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2006. Some famous bestsellers by the author include The White Castle, Snow, The Black Book, The Museum Of Innocence, My Name Is Red and The Silent House. After completing graduation from the University of Istanbul specialising in Journalism, Orhan dedicated his time and effort into writing. He is one of the most famous and well known authors in Turkey. His novels have sold more than 11 million copies and have been translated in more than 60 languages.
