Overview: It's Not My Favorite: Volume 1

The Hutchinson sisters grew up under the piercing, pious stare of a preacher's wife. Plagued by her ever-disappointed refrain, "Well, it's not my favorite." Their search to find their own way in the world has not been a screaming success. Gwenn is a good girl, a responsible girl? a miserable girl. Her steady diet of vivid fantasies is the only part of her life she enjoys. She daydreams of new parents, a more exciting job and an actual love life. She struggles to run a business as The Organizer , while she stacks relationship carcasses in the closet of her own completely unorganized life. Her only real friend is her younger sister, Rachel. Rachel is outgoing, risqu? and happily gay. The only people who don't know this little secret are her judgmental parents, Pastor Ed and Shirley. Rachel struggles mightily to dodge her mother's constant attempts to set her up with "nice Christian boys"; while holding down a job at the bakery and keeping up with her rock-star girlfriend! Gwenn uncovers a photo that brings her imaginary world careening into reality. She's forced to ask herself if wealthy artist, Daniel Gregory is the answer she's been seeking or a grand delusion. Break-ups, meltdowns, family secrets, wild nights and finally a journey of self-discovery to exotic New Zealand keep Gwenn and Rachel stumbling toward independence. So grab your parka and join the Hutchinson girls, as they experience the Lake Effect in Duluth, Minnesota!

  1.  3.5 out of 5 this book has a nice blend of several emotions. It was a delightful read with a great mix of diverse characters. 7 November, 2014 On
I really liked the sisters and their bonding is awesome. Both are like two ends of same coin who are incomplete without each other. Gwenn is the responsible one, always making everybody happy, never wanting to hurt others and organizing other people's life even though her own life is a mess; and Rachel is a happy go lucky girl who never misses to have fun, knows how to party and flow with the flow.

I really hated their parents especially Shirley. At some instances I really felt like strangling her or giving her a nice talk on how not to judge her children and for Pastor Ed, I just wanted to give him a nice slap that would wake him up from his don't-go-againt-wife-as-she-is-his-superhero sleep and ask him to understand his daughters.
Ah!!! Finally the hero or as I like to say passionate lover boy (more like man) Daniel Gregory. I really loved him. He has his own baggage from his past but the way he carries himself makes the ladies swarm into his direction. I really liked getting to know about his struggles he faced while getting control over his own Demons. He loved like really loved Gwenn - though it was only after a short meeting and a funny encounter with the drunk Gwenn, he really liked her. And the way he followed Gwenn across the globe to take her out from her misery was amazing.

I can seriously go on and on about the characters, they really were awesome. The perfectionist and the best-est friend Todd, the hardworking Flora and the man-whore Henry whom-i'd-like-to-punch.

Towards the end I felt like story was kinda loosely tied. I really hoped to see getting-to-know-each-other-scenes between Gwenn and Daniel. How was the relationship between the sisters with their parents after the BIG revelation. There was also some really big descriptions which slowed the pace and sometimes were not necessary, but it can be overlooked as I think they might be pointing towards the storyline of future books in the series (this is the only reason my mind would come up with when I saw that this is a series).

Overall it is nice read and I really had amazing experience following Gwenn on her self-discovery or the introspection journey while soaking in the beautiful sights of New Zealand. Rue wrote it so beautifully that I really wished I was there with Gwenn.
I did a little happy dance when I saw that this is a series and I might get more of these amazing characters(ahem! ahem! Todd and Flora's please) and might get few of my confusions cleared.
